Colour Theory: Hue and Saturation

Colour Theory: Hue and Saturation: COLOR THEORY TUTORIAL: The Color Wheel
Basic Colour Theory

Lecturer and landscape artist Scott Naismith explains concepts of hue and saturation using the color wheel. Concepts behind complementary colours revealed with a demonstration.

This video is intended as an educational aid for artists, graphic designers and illustrators to better understand the concepts of colour balance in terms of hue and saturation in order to assist colour mixing.

Reference is made to the work of both Henri Matisse and Mark Rothko.

DISCLAIMER: This video shows an inaccurate colour wheel. While it is widely accepted and taught this way, it is massively flawed. If you want to pull the wool from over your eyes, take a look at my video 'The Truth About The Colour Wheel'. RYB are not primary, however all other theories about using colour and saturation are valid.

How to Blend Colors and Paint in Photoshop: You can digitally paint in Photoshop as well as Painter. Many people do amazing work painting in Photoshop. Here is a very basic video on the mechanics of actually blending from color A to color B using a Wacom tablet and Photoshop.

This is not necessarily the best way to work, and I am far from the best, most skilled painter, but this is how I work. You feedback and improvements are welcome.

Topics include smudging, Gaussian blur, Wacom pen-pressure opacity, and color blending, but not color theory or color mixing, or speedpainting / art instruction

Digital Painting Tips - Color Blending for beginners: just a little video to help some of my friends with their digital painting. I'm not really a professional and everything I say isn't the right way by any means, just some helpful suggestions

Color Theory In Photography: Color theory is one of the most important aspects of art. Photography is no different. If you're interested in making fantastic images that stand out its a technique you'll need to get a handle on. The relationship between photographers and color theory is particularly interesting in that the approach to color has changed entirely over the history of making photographs.

In the early days of photography, images were produced in monochrome. It would still be a few years before the autochrome process became available. But even processes such as color gum bi-chromate or even autochrome for that matter, were more involved than basic monochrome photography. In the early days, the process was natively monochrome and color had to be approached and thought about completely differently.

Today in the digital age this is the complete opposite. Cameras natively shoot color images which are transferred to the computer in an RGB color space. Monochrome images today are made by manipulating a natively color image. This is completely opposite of where photography started. Color theory has become something that's thought about less since the images just come out in color.

Understanding Colour and Value: In this tutorial I try to explain the relationship between local colours and their inherent values.

How to Choose Colours and Use a Painter's Wheel: The three things you need to consider each time you select a new colour are:
  1. Is the colour I'm picking warmer or cooler than the current colour?
  2. Is the colour I'm picking lighter or darker than the current colour?
  3. Is the colour I'm picking more or less saturated than the current colour?
So basically it's a game of adjustment. Whenever you put down the colour, analyze it, see if it's right, if not, adjust it through the above process again. This works for traditional and digital painting methods.

Color Theory Using PhotoShop: RGB and CMYK color spaces defined using photoshop.

Color Theory Made Stupid: In this tutorial, I talk about color theory, mainly about color schemes and how they can change the mood of your painting. I also go into color there as it pertains to light and skin, realism and artistic presence.

Color Vision 1: Color Basics: First in series about Color Vision. White light, like Sunlight, shining through a prism reveals the colors of the Spectrum. Two ways to mix colors, Light works by addition, shown in RGB and HSL systems. Colored filters and paint work by subtraction. Properties of Primary and Complimentary colors. Metameric colors. Intro to Color Matching.

Color Vision 2: Color Matching: The science of color is based on Color Matching, the ability to match any color using 3 basic colors, red, green and blue. Results of color matching lead through color space, to a color map called the Chromaticity Diagram. That defines a standard way to specify color, and is very useful for understanding how color works and color vision. Number 2 in series about Color Vision.

How to create a good color palette: New series about colors! Simple tutorial, yet not "easy". This is what I do when I approach the creation of a color palette for my digital paintings.

Color Value & Contrast | Using The Correct Amount Of Dark & Light: Without the right amount of contrast, the colors in your artwork may look flat. You can get more depth in your work by learning to use Color VALUE properly. In this video, learn how to use VALUE & CONTRAST when creating digital artwork.

Color Selection and Web Design: Color Selection and Web Design - In this video I explain how you can go about learning to become better at choosing colors for your web design. Color theory and color selection is one of the hardest things for me to explain. Having no formal training myself, being able to blend and choose the right colors is something that you have to learn and become better at overtime. You ultimately know what looks right when looking at other nice designs. Simply study those designs and become better with practice.

Colour Theory: The Truth About The Colour Wheel: If you have not watched my first video: "Colour Theory: Hue and Saturation" I recommend you do before watching this unless of course you are very familiar with the conventional colour (color) wheel.

This video reveals the true colour wheel for artists and designers. that can be understood by looking at additive and subtractive color systems.

At the end of the video you can see the colour wheel up close. Note that this colour wheel is correct for additive colour and subtractive colour, it's just labeled differently for primaries and secondaries.

Colour: Mixing with Primary Paint: This is a painting tutorial by Scottish landscape artist and lecturer Scott Naismith. Although mixing using oils is featured, the same principles apply to watercolour, acrylic etc. A skin or flesh tone colour is mixed in a demonstration which illustrates the importance of cyan and magenta paint. This is the third part in a series of colour theory videos.

Colour Theory: Balance and Harmony: Using the CMY color wheel, Scott Naismith, a Scottish lecturer and artist, shows how you can achieve a balanced colour palette.

Colour Theory: Mixing using a colour wheel: Part 5 of the Colour Theory tutorials from Scottish landscape artist Scott Naismith deals with how to mix paint. More specifically, how to predict what should happen when colours mix by making reference to the colour wheel.

The Ultimate Guide to Adjustment Layers -- Color Balance and Selective Color: In this tutorial, we are going to have a look at the Color Balance and Selective Color adjustment layers in Photoshop. They work by balancing the percentage of primary and secondary colors in your images and can be used to fine-tune your colors. Although Color Balance and Selective Color are not used as often as the Hue/Saturation adjustment, for instance, they are still very useful once you know how and when to use them.

MPC New York was invited to contribute a generative artwork for the Media Center’s high profile launch. ‘The Color Project’ is part of an ongoing R&D concept created by MPC Digital in collaboration with artist Thompson Harrell and the launch piece remains on show at the center as one of five permanent installations.

The Made in NY Media Center by IFP brings together innovators across creative industries and is dedicated to defining and championing the future of digital storytelling. The space empowers artists by connecting them to resources and audiences with the aim of evolving their art.

‘The Color Project’ focuses on exploring narratives through color, line, and form found in geographic satellite imagery. This implementation of the project highlights the locations from many of the films that have been championed by IFP.

The formal motifs of each film location are explored in the form of a grid of 162 globes. In beautifully synchronicity, each view first plunges from space, coming to a stop on a single color in the landscape, creating a place-specific mosaic. Hopping from one location to the next, the piece reveals the character of Bogotá, Colombia (Maria Full of Grace), Cleveland, New York City, Florida (Stranger than Paradise), Vietnam and Virginia (The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers), among others, while also drawing attention to the contrast between the locations.

The piece utilizes Google Earth, and custom software programmatically records the geographical features of each location, which are presented on an impressive wall of 27 HD screens.

"Colorimetry" is a book at the crossroads between graphic design and visual arts. It's a catalog of shapes generated using the database of colorimetry and simple rules.
