Tipografía ::: Febrero de 2014

Buenos Aires deepest suburbs, July 2013. Three old print shops disputes the printing of cumbia and boxing posters. Second and third family generations keep these old presses going on printing in the way that workshops worked 100 years ago: the same machines, letterpress and workers, as if time had not passed. But they are getting old, machines are breaking and workshops agonize. They are aware that the road ahead is short. They are the last letterpressers in Argentina.

However, in the chaos of Buenos Aires downtown, some young designers started printing posters and cards with this ancient technique. In their small ateliers they combine the old craft with modern materials and designs, keeping it alive. Inspired and energetic they face the limitations and reflect about the value of time.

These two worlds combines old knowledge with new visions. A new dimension, where time limits get diffuse. A new voice appears, which includes the workshops slow music and gives eternity to feelings experienced for all those years.

Endless letterpress is a film about typography, but above all, about a group of people passionate for an ancient craft. Will these old presses and workshops survive in a new art? Or it's a new fad?

The new graphic style guide for the JTBC, one of the leading broadcasting company in Korea, was developed to reinforce the company’s identity and visual communication. The existing identity elements, the logotype and identity colors were disassembled and reassembled into 4 color units. Each unit was designed to have identical form factor and movement, visually representing each contents category of the company - drama, news, entertainment and culture. As building blocks of flexible design system including the on-air and off-air, the color units can be used in single/multiple compositions and organized/random arrangements.
This project went on-air on March 2013 across all media.

LX Type - The official font of Lisbon: The trams are part of Lisbon's landscape and become an icon of the city. In addition to painting the street yellow, they also scratch the capital's blue sky with their wires. From the complex mesh made by them, emerged the idea of creating a typography, whose trace is formed by the wires's random mating. Thus, the LX Type becomes Lisbon's official type.

I think it was at springtime 2012, when I came across David Shiyang Lius lovely piece of work about Ira Glass. It was the most inspiring and motivating video, I have ever seen in my life. I watched it over and over again, listened to Ira Glass' voice and told myself, that I am not the only person who is constantly disappointed about the gap between ones taste and ones skills. Later on in 2012 I decided to do an own filmed version of Iras interview - use my own language to tell his message. It took me about a year from concept to upload.

I made it for myself and for anybody who is in doubt with his/her creative career. I also think that Ira Glass' message isn't only limited to the creative industry. It can be applied to everyone who starts out in a new environment and is willing to improve.

THANK YOU
Ira Glass whom I've never met in real life but had such a big influence in my development. Thank you for telling beginners, what nobody else does.

David Shiyang Liu for the video, that initiated me to start that project. You all should watch his awesome kineticTypo-version here: http://vimeo.com/24715531

The people from current.tv who originally recorded the interview with Ira Glass. See the relevant part here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BI23U7U2aUY

The people from Magic Lantern who gave DSLR videography a new dimension (I chose this project to be a test run with the RAW plugin)!

Steven Sasseville for painting the "taste"-painting for me.
Pedro Sousa for his advice and working his ass off at the "creative work"-chalkboard.
Wolfgang Kraus for letting me borrow his sound equipment.
Kai Löhnert for working out on his birthday in the "fight"-take.
Wolfgang Hendrik Schnabel for giving me the museum-like atmosphere and his silhouette in the painting-takes.
Hermiyas Ötztürk for his hairy "good enough"-hand.
Orange Hive Studio for light equipment and location.
Mima and Heinz Sax-Schmitz for the location of the "ambitions"-take and finding me the "finish 1 story"-typewriter.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU
Solveig Gold for beeing the most patient and supporting person in my life. She appears in a lot of scenes in this video.
Jutta and Uwe Sax for several equipment and their support.

THE NEON MUZEUM

The Dutch design studio LUST has created a new interactive installation for the exhibition ‘Type/Dynamics’ at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. ‘Type/Dynamics’ interacts with and comments on the work of graphic designer Jurriaan Schrofer (1926–1990) in an effort to revitalize recent design history. The installation visualizes information that continuously surrounds us and is always accessible. By searching for real-time locations currently in the news, like "Ground Zero", "Reichstag”, or "Tiananmen square”, the installation can locate the panorama images from Google Streetview, abstract them into grids and fill the grids with new information. As a visitor to the space, you are literally 'transported’ to that location and surrounded by all the news associated with that specific location. Instead of a photographic representation, the place is represented purely typographically with a host of new items currently being talked about at that location. Nothing in the gallery space stands still; all information continuously moves.

Describing what being an artist is all about is a complex task. A sneak preview into the lives of talented local artists. For many artists the spark of creation has a birth, they understand the process of inspiration and the flare that moves and flow their passion into wonderful creations.

www.touchon.com

Born in 1956, Cecil Orion Touchon attended Saint Louis Community College at Flo Valley, North Texas State University and University of Texas at Arlington and studied Fine Arts. Widely exhibited through art galleries in the United States since 1980. Always working in an abstract/non-objective style, Touchon is best known for his work as a collage artist and painter.
Touchon is associated with the following art groups:
The Massurrealist Society
The Fluxnexus (founder)
The International Post Dogmatist Group (founder)
The Neoist Society (founder)
The International Society of Assemblage and Collag Artists (founder)
For his Fusion series, collage artist and painter Cecil Touchon touches upon this concept by chopping up street posters to create his own language. He then plasters these black, white, blue, and red geometric forms onto canvas and as he does, the abstract shapes nearly combine to form letters, though they’re none we know. Like clouds drifting across a summer sky, these curvy modern shapes – evocative of the typefaces of the 1970s – are there to be interpreted in any number of ways depending on the lens through which you see the world.
